Setting

人物、情節、背景，故事組成的三要素中，背景很常被讀者忽略，但是故事的背景十分重要，除了代表故事發生的時間、地點之外，情節背景能夠幫助營造故事氛圍，讓故事更具體，也能推進劇情發展。

Character

-a person represented in a film, play, or story.

人物、角色

了解英文故事中每個人物的性格並且加以分析，知道每個角色之間的關係，能夠清楚明白劇情的脈絡、發展，以及結局。舉例來說，在Oedipus Rex 伊底帕斯王的故事中，我們能夠從主角與他人的對話中發現，他是一個驕傲的人，Oedipus’s tragic flaw is hubris 伊底帕斯的悲劇性缺陷就是驕傲自大，而他這樣的性格是導致最後結局的重要因素，在我們把英文故事看到最後時，回想故事內容，就會發現故事人物的角色，確實影響了故事最終結局。

Plot

故事的情節發展大致上可分為五個部分

Exposition – introduces the main characters and sets the scene

Rising Action – intensity of events increases and the conflict grows

故事中衝突的發生

Climax – Turning point when events and situations change, for better or worse.

情況變得更好或更壞的轉捩點，故事的高潮

Falling Action – Suspense is prolonged as difficulties are confronted and questions are recognized and sometimes answered. The central character

typically overcomes conflict in this stage.

當困境被接受或是得到解答時，懸念、疑慮的延續。通常主角會克服衝突。

Resolution / Denouement – Remaining issues are reconciled. A sense of normalcy is reinstated. Characters, choices, and actions are validated, and future possibilities are presented.

剩下的問題被調和，情況似乎恢復正常，角色、選擇和行動會被作為未來可能性的決定因素。
